Blind and Deaf Dog Can Sense When Owner is Home
Remember Piper? That playful dog who pretended to be injured just to score some extra treats from his owner? Well, today, we have another heartwarming moment from him that we’d like to share with you.
Piper’s dad, Dennis Gerard, recently posted a TikTok video that melted hearts on social media. It captured the moment when Piper, his 17-year-old dog, who is both blind and deaf, could immediately tell that his owner had come back home.

Gerard saved Piper when he was two years old, along with his brother Radar, who unfortunately passed away three years ago. Before Gerard found and rescued them, both dogs had suffered from malnourishment and abuse. Sadly, these tough experiences left Piper with major health issues, making him deaf, blind, and dealing with dementia. These conditions made it very hard for him to find a caring forever home.
In the popular video, Piper is first shown lying on the floor, wrapped up in blankets, with the caption saying, “When your 17-year-old blind and deaf dog finally smells [that] you’re home from work.”
All of a sudden, Piper’s heartwarming response happens as he raises his head, as if he feels Gerard nearby. Despite his physical difficulties, Piper happily moves towards Gerard, showing his excitement with gentle rubs and affectionate licks.
“Now that he is blind and deaf, once he smells me, he will slowly and cautiously head in my direction. As soon as he gets to me, he starts rubbing against me and licking me in an excited way. He wants me to pick him up and hold him right and give him smooches,” Gerard said.
After being shared and spreading quickly on social media, the video has received around 4,000 likes and nearly 300 comments. All the comments perfectly capture how everyone feels about Piper’s story. People really appreciate the special bond between Gerard and his furry best friend. It’s truly heartwarming!
