But a recent call from worried customers at a nearby dollar store brought a different situation to the attention of the folks at Amelia County Animal Shelter, and the picture they received was something new for them.

At Dollar General in Jetersville, shoppers noticed an unusual scene as a lone pit bull sat outside the store’s exit, silently looking at them through the glass door, seeking attention with a soulful gaze.

Despite some scratches on her tough exterior, the dog’s eyes told a different story.

The kind people at the store gave her food and water and immediately called the local animal control office to make sure she was okay.

When the officers showed up to rescue the lone pit bull, now named Izzy, they found out she was a mom nursing her puppies. Soon enough, they located her adorable and hungry little ones nearby.

The ACAS team quickly took them to the shelter to make sure they were safe and well. The next day, they arranged a thorough vet visit, which included health check-ups, nail care, and the necessary medications for their recovery.

Izzy, with her loving nature, quickly became a favorite among the shelter staff. Everyone couldn’t resist spending quality time snuggling with her.

“[Mama], aka Izzy, is such a love bug,” ACAS wrote.

To help Izzy get better, the team gave her occasional breaks from being a mom, so she could get the care and attention she deserved.

One staff member looked after Izzy’s puppies, and another spent some good time with her. With personalized care, Izzy’s sweet and loving personality really stood out.

“Izzy is enjoying some time away from babies and in fresh air,” ACAS wrote in a Facebook update. “She is so gentle, taking treats.”

Right now, Izzy and her cute puppies are still at ACAS, working on getting stronger and healthier every day. Once they are all in good shape, they’ll find loving homes, giving them a chance for a better future.

But for now, the shelter team keeps giving them lots of love. Every warm cuddle helps the little family put their days of living outside the dollar store behind them.
