This Special Chapel Honors Our Faithful Dogs
The Dog Chapel sits atop Dog Mountain in Vermont, sprawling across 150 acres where people and their faithful canine companions can roam freely. This special place celebrates the unbreakable connection between dogs and their humans, serving as a tribute to those beloved pets who have passed away.
Established in the year 2000 by Stephen Huneck and his wife Gwen, the Dog Chapel arose from Stephen’s own journey of overcoming a serious illness. Inspired by the deep bond shared with their own dogs, the couple envisioned a sanctuary where others could also find solace alongside their furry friends. Thus, they constructed the chapel on their mountaintop farm in Vermont, USA, with the intention of offering comfort to grieving pet owners.
The chapel looks like a little old-fashioned church from the 1820s, all painted white and simple on the outside. Its tall steeple reaches high up into the sky, topped with a statue of a dog with wings, showing just how much this place loves dogs. You’ll find lots of sculptures of dogs around the grounds. Step inside, and you’ll see colorful glass windows decorated with pictures of dogs. And the walls inside are covered with notes that people have written to their dogs and other pets, like a big love letter.
Sadly, Stephen Huneck and his wife Gwen are no longer with us. But the folks who work there still take care of the Chapel, making sure it stays just as the founders wanted. And Dog Mountain is still free and open to everyone, just like they wanted it to be.
