90 Shelter Animals Transported to the Northeast to Create Space for Pets Affected by Hurricane Ian

Thanks to recent action, ninety rescued pets have been relocated to safety and are aiding other needy animals.

After Hurricane Ian struck, Greater Good Charities responded swiftly on October 2 by initiating an urgent rescue operation through their Good Flights program, airlifting 54 cats and 36 dogs.

The life-saving flight took off from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, transporting 90 pets in need of adoption from animal shelters in Naples, Fort Meyers, and other hurricane-ravaged parts of Florida. This initiative aimed to create space for an anticipated influx of animals affected by the devastating Hurricane Ian. Greater Good Charities reported that some shelters in Florida were damaged during the hurricane, while others are preparing to welcome pets that were lost, injured, or abandoned during the destructive storm.

On Wednesday, Hurricane Ian struck the land with immense force as a highly perilous Category 4 storm, bringing sustained winds of 150 mph. The National Hurricane Center confirmed that the destructive storm made landfall just after 3 p.m. local time near Cayo Costa, Fla.

By Thursday morning, the aftermath of the storm had left over 2.5 million people in Florida without electricity due to the extensive destruction it caused. The powerful storm wreaked havoc by uprooting trees, demolishing homes, and ripping down power lines along the coastline.

CNN and CBS News have reported that the devastating Category 4 storm, which swept through Florida last week, tragically resulted in a minimum of 99 fatalities.

“This emergency flight of shelter pets from Florida is one of many efforts that Greater Good Charities is doing to help the people and pets impacted by Hurricane Ian,” Liz Baker, CEO of Greater Good Charities, shared in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. “We are planning for possible future transports and are also working diligently with partners in affected and surrounding areas to send in pet food, supplies, and humanitarian aid to help the people and pets reeling from this catastrophic disaster.”

The Humane Society of Broward County, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, Collier County Domestic Animal Services, and Gulf Coast Humane Society collaborated to send shelter pets on an emergency charity flight. This crucial mission was made possible through generous donations from Tito’s Handmade Vodka and The Animal Rescue Site.

Cherie Wachter, Vice President of Marketing for The Humane Society of Broward County, clarified the purpose behind their efforts: “By helping the affected areas, specifically taking animals from the shelters that were there before the storm, it alleviates pressure for the shelter staff, to focus on helping the incoming displaced animals, ”

When the rescue flight arrived at Morristown Airport in Morristown, New Jersey, dedicated team members from St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center, Liberty Humane Society, the Pennsylvania SPCA, and Lucky Dog Animal Rescue were present on site.

The 90 pets have now found comfort in their new shelters and are getting ready to seek loving homes in the Northeast.

“When disaster strikes, the animal welfare community bands together to help pets and people in need. St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center is one of the organizations that has stepped up to help our Florida shelter partners as they deal with this crisis,” Diane Ashton, the director of communications at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center, said. “Some of the pets evacuated from Florida will be ready for adoption at our shelter in New Jersey soon. Right now, they’re getting a lot of TLC from our staff! We can’t wait to find these wonderful pets new loving homes.”
