Ailing Irrawaddy Dolphin Recovers Gradually with Nourishing Tube-Feeding and Assistance from Many Individuals

Ailing Irrawaddy Dolphin Recovers Gradually with Nourishing Tube-Feeding and Assistance from Many Individuals

As habitat loss and human activities continue to cause the extinction of many species, the delicate balance of biodiversity is threatened, posing a serious risk to human survival. Recognizing the gravity of this situation, many people are now working to aid struggling animal populations and prevent further loss of biodiversity.

In July 2022, a feeble Irrawaddy dolphin calf was discovered by a fisherman near the coast of Thailand, struggling to swim and in need of urgent medical attention. The fisherman promptly contacted marine conservationists for guidance on caring for the calf while awaiting the arrival of the rescue team.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the population of dolphins has significantly declined due to pollution, habitat loss, and bycatching, making them one of the vulnerable species. Irrawaddy dolphins are known to inhabit three rivers in Myanmar, Cambodia, and Indonesia, as well as the shallow coastal waters of South and Southeast Asia. A marine research institute estimates that there are roughly 400 Irrawaddy dolphins residing on Thailand’s eastern coast that borders Cambodia.

After rescuing the young dolphin, the rescuers transported it to a facility located in Rayong on the Gulf of Thailand, where they named it Paradon, which translates to “brotherly burden” in honor of the challenging rescue effort. At the time of the rescue, the dolphin weighed only around 27 kilograms (59 pounds) and measured approximately 138 centimeters (4.5 feet) in length.

Fortunately, numerous volunteers and veterinarians offered their assistance in caring for Paradon. They housed the dolphin in a saltwater pool, administered treatment for its lung infection, and provided around-the-clock care and attention.

“We said among ourselves that the chance of him surviving was quite low, judging from his condition,” Thanaphan Chomchuen, a vet at the center, shared.

Initially, the volunteers had to feed the baby dolphin milk through a tube until it was strong enough to consume it from a bottle. Despite being fed every 20 minutes, Paradon remained weak due to insufficient milk intake.

“He does not eat enough but rather just wants to play. I am worried that he does not receive enough nutrition,” Thippunyar Thipjuntar, a 32-year-old volunteer said.

The woman developed an affection for the dolphin, appreciating its round face and lips that appeared to form a smile. Hence, she was concerned about his condition: “When you invest your time, physical effort, mental attention, and money to come here to be a volunteer, of course, you wish that he would grow strong and survive.”

The director of the marine center, Sumana Kajonwattanakul, stated that Paradon would only be deemed ready for release back into the ocean once it was capable of foraging for food independently. To ensure its readiness, the dolphin required long-term care for approximately one year. “If we just release him when he gets better, the problem is that he won’t be able to have milk. We will have to take care of him until he has his teeth, then we must train him to eat fish, and be part of a pod. This will take quite some time,” Sumana said.

According to the veterinarian, Thanaphan, all the efforts invested in rescuing and rehabilitating Paradon were meaningful and justified. “If we can save one dolphin, this will help our knowledge, as there have not been many successful cases in treating this type of animal.”

“If we can save him and he survives, we will have learned so much from this. Secondly, I think by saving him, giving him a chance to live, we also raise awareness about the conservation of this species of animal, which are rare, with not many left,” he added.

Needy Dog Seeks Help from Passing Cars, Hoping for Help

Needy Dog Seeks Help from Passing Cars, Hoping for Help

One day in Miami, Florida, a compassionate person was surprised to see a dog running alone in traffic. This determined dog was urgently stopping cars, asking for help.

Approaching each vehicle, the dog sought assistance, but unfortunately, every car drove away, ignoring her pleas.

Without a second thought, a compassionate person decided to stop and help. The rescuer swiftly picked up the sad puppy and drove her to safety. They named the puppy Olivia and took her to Miami-Dade Animal Services for further assistance. It was there that Rosa Fond, the founder of Humans and Animals United (HAU), first learned about her.

A representative from HAU went to Miami-Dade Animal Services to officially meet Olivia and sent a photo of the lonely pup to Fond. “When I saw her video, I just cried and immediately spoke with our team to arrange to help Olivia,” Fond said.

When Fond watched the video of Olivia, she was touched and really wanted to help her.

Rosa Fond recounted, “We don’t know how long she was out there waiting for rescue. A defenseless dog who can’t speak our language asking for help the only way she knew how: just by going up to cars.”

The team shared a picture of the sweet but injured girl with Fond. Here’s what she had to say: “She was sad with her little tongue sticking out, probably waiting for the family that would never come to look for her,” Fond shared. “It shattered me to see her that way.”

HAU quickly took Olivia in and found her a caring foster family.

Fond noted, “She certainly has a special, princess-like personality.”

At her loving home, Olivia started revealing her true self. Whether she’s relaxing on the couch or playing with her foster siblings, Olivia has a special knack for connecting with her human friends.

“Olivia is a talker!” Fond said. “This girl will talk you into giving her anything she wants. She will look at you and melt your heart while talking to you to help you understand what she needs.”

Even though it’s only been a few weeks since she was rescued, every day in her new home feels like a lifetime.

While Olivia is still looking for her perfect forever family, Fond is hopeful they’ll be found soon. Olivia is now in a safe and loving environment, surrounded by a caring rescue family, and she no longer has to feel unwanted or beg for help.

Fond said “Olivia will never know what it’s like to be unwanted or beg for anyone to help her again. She is a special girl who had angels watching over her. She now has an entire rescue family watching over her, too.”

Meet Milly, the Brave Survivor of Brain Surgery, Now Enjoying a Wonderful Life

Meet Milly, the Brave Survivor of Brain Surgery, Now Enjoying a Wonderful Life

Get ready to meet a unique cat named Milly, who has been on a remarkable journey to find joy.

Milly was born with some special health challenges: a large head (hydrocephalus), a different front leg (radial aplasia), and a slight overbite. She earned the nickname ‘Helmet Queen’ because she requires a special helmet and a soft, cushioned space to stay safe.

Nevertheless, Milly is the most affectionate and cuddly cat you’ll ever encounter.

Caroline, Milly’s foster mom, adores her, often mentioning how Milly is a kitty brimming with love and joy. Milly’s delightful personality has the power to bring happiness to everyone she meets.

“I wish everyone could meet Milly! She’s so special, and she literally radiates love and joy. She loves everyone and wears her heart on her sleeve,” shared Caroline.

Her story began when she was given away for free at only two months old, but her first family soon realized she needed extra attention. That’s when she was taken in by Baby Kitten Rescue, where she met her loving foster mom.

Many kittens with health challenges like hers face tough times, but Milly is a determined fighter.

She found a home with caregivers who had taken care of a cat named Otter before, and Otter had overcome similar challenges with successful surgery while wearing a helmet. Much like Otter, Milly earned the title of ‘Helmet Queen’.

Milly faced a challenge because the soft spot on her skull, called the fontanelle, was closed, causing extra fluid pressure in her brain. To address her special situation, she needed a risky and specialized operation, which was quite expensive.

Everyone who met Milly instantly fell in love with her and was eager to assist her, no matter the cost.

The Baby Kitten Rescue team was committed to giving her a chance at a happy, healthy life, emphasizing that her life was important and that she deserved an opportunity to live fully.

“This is by far the most expensive surgery we’ve ever provided. But Milly is worth it. Her life matters. And she has the chance to live a full, healthy, and happy life if she gets this surgery! So we are going to give her that chance.”

And you know what? The challenging brain surgery went well! Thanks to the talented vet team, Milly came out of it smoothly, achieving an amazing triumph. The team is thrilled for cats like Milly who now have a better chance to overcome hydrocephalus.

“I’m SO grateful Milly had the opportunity to receive this surgery!!! Up until very recently, hydrocephalus was a death sentence for cats and dogs. But thanks to progressive veterinarians like Dr. O’Neill at Metropolitan Animal Specialty Hospital, kitties like Milly now have the chance at living a full, healthy, and happy life with shunt surgery!”

However, her story didn’t conclude after the surgery.

Milly had a lengthy and gradual recovery ahead of her. Yet, she showed remarkable strength, consistently impressing everyone with her improvement. The medications that assisted in handling her hydrocephalus were slowly decreased after the surgery.

Following this transformative procedure, Milly not only gained a new lease on life but also discovered her permanent home with a wonderful, caring couple. Now, she reigns as the queen of her domain, enjoying all the love and attention she deserves.
