One morning, Robin Williams and her partner were not surprised to hear high-pitched meows coming from their porch. Baby Cat, a friendly stray cat from the neighborhood, would frequently visit them and use her meows to announce her presence.

“Baby Cat has been coming to our house for the past year now and has always been very loud,” Williams told The Dodo. “She would come to the door, and she would meow very loud to get our attention.”

However, this time, there was something distinct and unusual about the cat’s cries.

The couple was accustomed to hearing meowing sounds around their house. Besides the stray cats that would frequently visit them for care and nourishment, Williams and her partner also had a cat of their own. However, as soon as they encountered Baby Cat for the first time, they immediately sensed her uniqueness.

“She trusted us from the first day we met her,” Williams said. “Baby Cat was always with this older gray cat. The older cat was too scared to come and get food from the porch, but Baby Cat would walk right up to the door and get food from us.”

From that day forward, Baby Cat began making regular visits to Williams’ home. It didn’t take long for the couple’s connection with the stray cat to transform from being strangers to becoming the best of friends.

“She was always willing to get close to us, and as time went on, she got more and more trusting,” Williams said. “She went from coming over for food to letting us give her pets, and then she started coming inside the house to eat food. Then, it got to the point where she would spend a lot of time in our basement, sometimes overnight.”

After a few months of their regular interactions, Williams observed a change in Baby Cat’s appearance. Despite her typically small and slender frame, she was starting to grow. The couple soon realized that the cat was pregnant, and they held onto the hope that she would feel comfortable enough to give birth to her kittens near their home.

“We even thought that, because she spent so much time at our house, she would end up having the kittens in our basement,” Williams said.

However, as Baby Cat continued her routine of visiting their doorstep every morning, she would always leave again in the evening. That was until one day when Baby Cat arrived at Williams’ house for breakfast and stayed longer than usual. As Williams prepared her food, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something had changed about the cat.

“Her meows were different that morning — they were deeper and went on for longer than her normal meow,” Williams said. “We just figured that she was just really hungry, but then we went up to the window.”

Williams and her partner noticed through the window that Baby Cat appeared unexpectedly thin once more. They quickly turned to retrieve her food, but when they opened the door just a few seconds later, Baby Cat had vanished.

“Then, when we put the food down, we saw her coming onto the porch with a kitten in her mouth,” Williams said. “Once she dropped off the first baby, she ran off of the porch and ran to the house two houses down, which is an abandoned house.”

Williams’ partner tracked Baby Cat to the deserted house, hoping to find all her kittens, while Williams carefully arranged a warm and comfortable bed for the first baby. With great tenderness, Baby Cat brought her kittens, one by one, to Williams.

“We found four,” Williams said. “We named them Eeny, Meeny, Miny, and Moe based on the order that we met them.”

After ensuring the safety of all her babies, Baby Cat confidently entered Williams’ house and immediately began nurturing and taking care of her kittens.

“Baby Cat immediately started to feed them and clean them,” Williams said. “She is a great mother.”

Williams set up a cozy shelter for Baby Cat and her precious family in her basement, providing them with a private and safe space. In a matter of weeks, the once-stray cat transformed into a nurturing and experienced mother, showering her kittens with love and care.

“She is still very vocal, so there are many times when we just hear her talking to the kittens and the kittens talking back to her,” Williams said. “Especially vocal when the kittens are doing something that she doesn’t approve of, like trying to climb out of the box or jumping on one another.”

As the kittens grew, their unique personalities began to shine brighter with each passing day.

“The kittens are great,” Williams said. “We have one that is shy and timid, one that has the heaviest little stomach and is the first to try to climb out of their enclosure, and the other two are a mixture of timid and rambunctious.”

The kittens are now a few months old, and soon they will be ready to find their forever homes. Williams had hoped to keep Baby Cat, but sadly, her current cat and the stray do not get along. Therefore, she is actively searching for the ideal family to adopt Baby Cat once her kittens have found their new families.

Until then, Williams and her partner will keep giving the little, furry family all the love and care they need. They never expected that welcoming a vocal stray into their lives would mean raising a litter of adorable kittens, but they wouldn’t change it for anything.
