When people living in a neighborhood in Southern California heard a disturbance in their yard during the late hours of the night, they initially dismissed it as inconsequential. However, a few minutes later, they became aware of a dog’s distant cries, which caught their attention.

“They went out there to check, and there he was,” Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy dog rescue, told The Dodo.

Much to their astonishment, the residents discovered a large, white dog in their yard with a long leash tangled multiple times around their mailbox. The family had no clue about the dog’s origin, but they immediately recognized the need to seek assistance for him.

“They put out food and water, but they were afraid to touch his leash,” Hall said. “And he was just so, so scared, too.”

The family contacted Logan’s Legacy for assistance, and soon Hall’s rescue partner, Tracey, arrived at the scene. Realizing the urgency, Tracey understood the necessity of untangling the dog’s leash. However, initially, the dog hesitated to let her approach and get close enough to help.

“He was totally withdrawn,” Hall said. “He would back up from anyone who would try to talk to him or anything.”

Nevertheless, Tracey remained resolute in her mission to liberate the dog, who would later be named Hercules. Prior to attempting to handle the leash, Tracey took a seat beside Hercules and began gradually earning his trust.

“She just sat there quietly and spoke to him,” Hall said. “Eventually, she was able to get another leash around his neck, and then she unhooked the horrible leash that he was left tied with.”

After considerable effort, Hercules was finally released from the tethered leash. Tracey guided him towards her car and drove him to Camino Pet Hospital. While Hercules underwent a thorough examination by the veterinary staff at Camino, Hall and her rescue partners initiated the search for a suitable foster family to care for Hercules.

Once a foster family was eventually located, Hercules developed an instant affection for them.

“Finally, we found a foster family, and it was like love at first sight,” Hall said. “He literally melted into their daughter’s hand.”

Hercules’ foster family also quickly developed a deep affection for the pup and eagerly welcomed him into their home to bond with his new dog brother. The two pups instantly connected, and for several days, the rescued pup experienced pure joy. When he wasn’t joyfully sprinting around the yard with his foster brother, Hercules could often be found snuggled up with his human foster sister, relishing in moments of cozy companionship.

Subsequently, Hercules became afflicted with a severe cough.

Regrettably, Hercules received a diagnosis of a contagious virus known as kennel cough. To ensure the safety of his foster brother, Hercules’ medical team made the difficult decision to relocate him from the home and return him to the clinic.

“He got so sick, and they couldn’t have him around their dog,” Hall said. “But they’ve gone over to visit him. He perks up every time he sees them.”

Currently, Hercules is still undergoing treatment at the hospital, and although his foster family is not yet prepared to officially adopt him, they make frequent visits to see him. Hall and her team also make a point to visit Hercules, and his heartwarming reaction upon seeing them is always a touching sight.

“As soon as he sees me or Tracey, he perks up,” Hall said. “He starts wiggling his tail. It’s like he knows that we are there and that we love him.”

As Hercules’ permanent home has not yet been finalized, Hall is actively seeking the ideal family who will make a lifelong commitment to him. Given Hercules’ affectionate nature, Hall hopes to find a family that will cherish him wholeheartedly, reciprocating the immense love he has to offer.

“He’s such a loving boy,” Hall said. “He’s a little shy at first, but when he warms up, all he wants is love. He’s gonna need the most amazing home.”

As the quest for Hercules’ forever family persists, Hall, Tracey, and his foster family will remain by his side in the hospital, offering unwavering support and care throughout his recovery.

While the adorable pup has not yet reached his fairytale ending, his rescuers firmly believe that a joyful life, filled with remarkable individuals by his side, is right within Hercules’ reach.
