Lost Dog Roams 150 Miles Across Frozen Alaskan Waters to Reunite with Loving Family

Lost Dog Roams 150 Miles Across Frozen Alaskan Waters to Reunite with Loving Family

In March, while Nanuq and his owners were visiting Savoogna City on St. Lawrence Island, something incredible happened. Nanuq, a one-year-old Australian shepherd known for his Siberian Yupik name “Nanuq” meaning “polar bear,” embarked on an extraordinary 150-mile adventure across the frozen landscapes of Alaska. Nanuq and another dog named Starlight went missing during their time there, as shared by Mandy Iworrigan, Nanuq’s owner.

Although Starlight eventually found his way back to the family two weeks later, Nanuq was still missing. With heavy hearts, the family returned to their home in Gambell, which was 37 miles north of Savoogna, assuming that they had lost Nanuq forever. However, fate had something else in store for them. Unbelievably, Nanuq miraculously returned to them, but not without an unidentified bite wound on his leg.

Iworrigan was clueless about Nanuq’s whereabouts until a family member showed her a photo on Facebook. The picture depicted a missing dog that looked remarkably similar to Nanuq. It turned out that Nanuq had embarked on an incredible journey, crossing the frozen Bering Sea and traveling over 100 miles north to the town of Wales. On April 6, Iworrigan captured a heartwarming moment as Nanuq was reunited with her daughter.

“My dad texted me and said, ‘There’s a dog that looks like Nanuq in Wales,’” Mandy told CBS. “I have no idea why he ended up in Wales. Maybe the ice shifted while he was hunting. I’m pretty sure he ate leftovers of seal or caught a seal. Probably birds, too. He eats our Native foods. He’s smart.”

Iworrigan quickly made arrangements to bring her dog back from Wales to Gambell by booking a direct flight. On April 6, she recorded the joyful scene of her and her daughter eagerly waiting for the regional plane carrying Nanuq. In the nearly 12-minute video, Iworrigan’s daughter can be heard shouting with excitement as Nanuq, accompanied by their other dog Starlight, finally arrives.

“Sounds like a Disney Movie- but it’s REAL!” the woman wrote on Facebook.

Despite getting bitten on his leg and needing immediate medical attention, Nanuq appeared to be in overall good condition. However, it’s still uncertain what creature was responsible for the bite, although the family suspects it could have been a polar bear, wolverine, or seal. Iworrigan described the bite as significant. Sadly, the family couldn’t afford the $750 required for treatment. Thankfully, the nonprofit organization PAWS of Nome kindly stepped in and offered their assistance.

Jazzy Reunites with his Dad After Seven Years and Several States Away

Jazzy Reunites with his Dad After Seven Years and Several States Away

When dog parents lose a pup that’s gone missing for a year or more, they often give up on the search. But sometimes truths prove stranger than fiction, as was the case with Jazzy, recently found abandoned in a hotel room by the Orange County Animal Shelter in Florida.

“She had a bad case of arthritis, but was extremely sweet and gentle and allowed us to care for her as best we could.” The organization said in a Facebook post. “We knew in her condition she’d be hard to find a home for. People line up outside our doors for puppies and small dogs; seniors always get overlooked and ignored.”

However, in Jazzy’s case, she had been microchipped. They located her original owners, a family residing in Texas.

“When we called them, we gave them the surprise of a lifetime. The organization said. “You see, Jazzy was 12 years old, and she had been five when she had gotten spooked by fireworks and run away.”

After years of searching, Jazzy’s owner Kerry hopped on a plane to get his dog back.

“It was a tearful reunion, and it was incredible to watch Jazzy come to life at her owner’s voice,” the organization said. “Kerry was overjoyed and regaled us with stories about her. And Jazzy couldn’t take her eyes off him. She licked his hand and inched her body as close as she could to him.”

After all that time. “Her heart still remembered and was finally whole.”
