Resilient Shelter Dog Finds Forever Home After Heart-Wrenching Video Goes Viral

Resilient Shelter Dog Finds Forever Home After Heart-Wrenching Video Goes Viral

While intended as a temporary haven for homeless animals, animal shelters often become their long-term residences instead of finding them permanent homes.

In an effort to honor the one-year stay of one of their shelter pets, Seminole County Animal Services in Florida created a poignant timelapse video featuring Sophie patiently awaiting her forever family’s arrival.

As a result of the video’s widespread popularity, a multitude of individuals visited the shelter to inquire about Sophie, leading to her long-awaited adoption.

Sophie, a gentle and affectionate seven-year-old dog, endured a lengthy and solitary year at the shelter, exhibiting unwavering patience in her search for a forever home. Despite her sincere attempts to attract the notice of those who passed by, she remained consistently unnoticed and overlooked.

“Sophie came in because her owners stated she ran up to someone walking their dog, and they were unable to handle her any longer. She was a very happy dog here. In the beginning, just like any dog when they first get here, she was nervous and would bark at everyone. She settled in and shortly became a shelter favorite,” shared the staff.

In celebration of Sophie’s one-year milestone, the dedicated shelter staff took the initiative to create a captivating timelapse video capturing her daily routines, with the heartfelt intention of increasing her chances of finding a loving forever home.

As Sophie’s one-year anniversary at the shelter drew near, the compassionate staff decided to share a poignant time-lapse video on their Facebook page. The touching footage captured Sophie’s eager anticipation as she waited in the corridor, hoping for potential adopters to notice her. The inspiration behind this idea came from observing similar videos created by other facilities. The staff collaborated with their AV department to set up a time-lapse camera in Sophie’s kennel for a day, intending to illustrate the frequency of people passing by without noticing her and to provide the public with a glimpse into the daily experiences of the animals in their care.

The staff at Seminole County Animal Services shared valuable advice for individuals who are considering pet adoption but feel uncertain. “My best advice for someone interested in adopting a pet would first be to make sure you are ready for the commitment. Then, it would be to stop by your local shelter and ask questions. The staff knows the animals in their care the best. Let them know your lifestyle and what you may be looking for in a new pet. Come in open-minded, animals come in all shapes, sizes, personalities, and ages. Take your time meeting them, you’ll never get a clear understanding of a potential new pet after meeting it for a couple of minutes. Remember, they spend a lot of time stuck in their kennels, so when they come out to meet a potential new family, they are usually overly excited and need to get some energy out of their system, or it may take them a little while to get used to an unfamiliar face or scent. It can all be overwhelming for you and the animals, but going to a shelter can also be a great experience. Just be patient and open-minded, you may just find exactly what you are looking for and then some.”

Fortunately, the viral spread of the video led to a heartwarming outcome: Sophie, who had spent 364 days at Seminole County Animal Services, was joyfully united with her new loving father.

The plan proved successful, as Sophie’s video went viral and resulted in several other dogs finding homes too. “We were shocked when we got a HUGE response from the public. It was our most shared post. I don’t think anything we’ve ever posted has gotten so much traction. The very next day, we had emails, voicemails, people calling the shelter asking about her, comments, and Facebook messages to sort through. I don’t think we even got a chance to respond to all of them before she got adopted.”

Despite previous claims of Sophie being unfriendly with other dogs, her new family has proven those claims wrong, as she now happily resides with them.

“Adoption opens at 10 am every day. I believe only one hour after the adoption opened, we had a gentleman come in specifically for her. He said he and his wife had seen her Facebook post, and he had to come in. He spent some time with her. She was her typical sweet self, and he had fallen in love. He mentioned a few times his wife was on board and just from the post didn’t even need to meet her to know she wanted to adopt, so that’s exactly what he did. Due to what her previous owner had said about her not getting along with other dogs, we had warned him, because he had 2 other dogs at home, and it didn’t even seem to faze him. We are so glad to be proven wrong because it’s been about 2 and a half weeks, and the last update we got was that she was doing wonderful with her new family and 2 new doggie sisters,” shared the staff.

While the timelapse video initially depicted a somber scene, it ultimately led to the joyous outcome of Sophie finding the happiness and love she truly deserved.

While we celebrate Sophie’s well-deserved happy ending, it’s important to remember that countless other dogs are still patiently waiting for their own chance at a forever home. “Hopefully, Sophie’s story and the video of her in her kennel can make people consider visiting a shelter and take their time walking through. We understand it can be stressful, it’s loud and it’s sad to see all the animals in a cage, but how do you think they feel? Much like Sophie, a lot of these dogs watch as people and other dogs come and go, seeing the smaller/cuter/younger ones get adopted quickly while they just watch from behind their kennel doors day in and day out. We fall in love with their furry faces and want the best for them, so we hope the video and Sophie’s story can encourage people to stop by their local shelter,” shared Seminole County Animal Services staff.

These Pics Are Art and the Artists Are Insects

Flying insects move so quickly that they are hard to follow, but new technology and some smart ideas have helped Spanish photographer Xavi Bou do just that. After spending 10 years focusing on birds in flight for his Ornithographies project, he turned his attention to insects.

For Entomographies, he uses high-speed video footage taken by Adrian Smith, an insect expert at North Carolina State University, to study and record how insects move. Bou then picks multiple frames and combines them into single images that show the fast movements of one or more insects through space and time.

With Smith’s help, Bou has captured the aerial tricks of wasps, the jumps of leafhoppers, and the fluttering of butterflies in amazing detail. He hopes that by doing this, he can make people more aware of the decline in important insect populations around the world.

1. Zebra longwing

This butterfly, which is common in many areas of the Americas, really fits its name. It can fly very high with just a few flaps of its large wings.

2. Two-lined spittlebug

This insect, which comes from the eastern United States, is often seen as a pest because it likes to eat grass. Its springy back legs can make it jump into the air like a rocket.

3. Yellow-collared scape moth

Unlike most moths, this North American species flies during the day. Its shiny blue-black wings sparkle in the sunlight.

4. Ailanthus webworm moths

These tropical moths have spread farther north in the U.S. Because of their larval host, the invasive tree of heaven, they are now one of the most common backyard moths in the country.

5. Common stonefly

Mostly found in eastern North America, this insect starts its life as an underwater nymph in forested streams or rivers. Then it leaves the water, sheds its skin, and becomes an adult with wings.

6. Green lacewings

Eighty-seven species of this insect have been found in the U.S. and Canada. Since they eat a lot of unwanted plant pests like aphids and mites, they are often used to naturally control these pests.

7. Grapevine beetle

This insect, fittingly named, eats the leaves and fruit of grapevines, both wild and farmed, but it doesn’t do much damage to the plants. As a type of scarab beetle, it often flies in a curved path.

8. Oak treehopper and green treehopper

Treehoppers are known for their uniquely shaped pronotum, the part behind their head, which often looks like plant parts to hide from predators. They can jump well thanks to special muscles.

9. Banded orange

This brightly colored butterfly can be found from Mexico to Brazil. Before mating season, male butterflies look for mineral salts, sometimes even drinking salty fluids from the skin, eyes, and nostrils of other animals.

10. Sapho longwing

Longwings can live for 6 to 7 months, longer than most butterflies. This type, found from Mexico to Ecuador, has shiny blue wings, which is why it’s also called the Sapphire longwing.

Eagle and Fox in an Epic Midair Battle Over a Rabbit, Were Captured by a Photographer

Eagle and Fox in an Epic Midair Battle Over a Rabbit, Were Captured by a Photographer

Wildlife photography often depends on the perfect combination of good timing and the right place.

That’s exactly what happened when Kevin Ebi, an experienced wildlife photographer, captured an incredible battle between a bald eagle and a red fox, both competing for a rabbit meal.

In a detailed blog post, Ebi shares the fascinating series of events that unfolded while he was photographing foxes in San Juan Island National Historical Park, located in Washington state.

Ebi noticed a lively group of eight fox kits as they began their hunting lessons. Suddenly, they spotted a rabbit, and a thrilling chase ensued. Eventually, one of the foxes emerged as the winner, proudly carrying the rabbit across the field.

Ebi shares what happened at that moment: “As I followed the fox with my camera, a sudden bald eagle cry caught my attention. It was swiftly approaching, clearly aiming for the rabbit. I quickly focused on the fox, anticipating a quick turnover of events.”

To Ebi’s astonishment, instead of a quick surrender, the situation turned into a intense fight in the air.

The eagle used its power to lift the fox and rabbit high up in the sky. Even while airborne, the fox attempted to break free by swinging back and forth.

In the end, the eagle moved the rabbit to its other claw, causing the fox to let go. The intense battle came to an end in less than 10 seconds.

For those worried about the fox’s well-being after the fight, Ebi reassures that it was not injured. The fox swiftly bounced back from the encounter and resumed its playful behavior with the other young foxes, showing no visible wounds from the aerial clash.
