In the green neighborhoods of Austin, there’s a small poodle named Z showing everyone how to live life to the fullest. Tran Le brought Z into her home two years ago, adopting her from a nearby shelter. Even though Z’s eyes are cloudy because of cataracts and glaucoma, it doesn’t stop her from being lively. Tran told The Dodo, “Even without her sight, Z had this infectious energy that just filled the room.”
When Z had to have her eyes removed because of her condition, people worried about how it would change her life. But Z, always looking on the bright side, adjusted quickly. She moved around her new world easily, using her other senses to enjoy life to the fullest.

Z’s love for playing fetch is one of her most surprising skills because usually, dogs need to see to play this game. But Z has turned what might seem like a problem into one of her favorite things to do. “She’s got this incredible knack for following the sound of the ball,” Tran explains. “She’ll perk up her ears, tilt her head, and once that ball hits the ground, she’s off!”
People at the park often watch in amazement as Z races across the grass, her ears listening carefully, her nose sniffing the ground to find the ball. When she grabs it and brings it back, she looks proud and ready to play again.
