Here’s a heartwarming tale from Hopkinsville, Kentucky, about Bolo, a lovable pit bull mix who earned the title of the first-ever “paw-trol officer” at the Hopkinsville Police Department (HPD). Bolo’s journey started when he attended an adoption event with the Christian County Animal Shelter in October, expecting to be a temporary visitor. But, surprise! Bolo and his delightful qualities had different plans.

The HPD launched a weekly program called #PawtrolWednesday to introduce shelter dogs to the community. Their initial plan was to bring shelter dogs to the department every Wednesday, let them socialize, share their stories on social media, and hopefully, help them find forever homes.
But Bolo, with his charming personality, completely changed the HPD’s plans. Chief Jason Newby, in a cheerful Facebook video, shared how everyone at the department fell in love with Bolo during his visit, mentioning that “oddly enough, everybody fell in love with him.”

Clearly, Bolo’s charm was irresistible. When it was time for him to return to the shelter at the end of the day, something special occurred. As they attempted to put him back in his cage, Bolo lowered his head, whimpered, and, well, hearts melted all around. In a surprising turn of events, the decision was made on the spot—Bolo wasn’t going back; he was officially adopted into the HPD family.

The exciting moment occurred at a Hopkinsville City Council meeting on November 7, where Mayor James R. Knight Jr. led the “swearing-in” ceremony. Bolo, the final one to take the oath, went up to the mayor to make his promise, pledging to “support the citizens of the City of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, as I serve as Paw-trol Dog.” And, of course, he sealed it with a paw print.

In addition to his official role as a Paw-trol officer, Bolo has become a local celebrity. He even read to kids at a nearby library with Officer Marfil for “Hometown Heroes storytime.” Marfil can’t help but praise Bolo’s constant happiness, noting how his cheerful vibes brighten everyone’s workday.
